These kids are trying to raise money to take their school choir to NYC.

Can you help them out?

A little bit of context:

St. Helena is historically one of the lowest-performing and highest-poverty parishes in Louisiana. Although the racial makeup of St. Helena Parish is estimated to be 46% white and 52% African American, its public schools are 93% African American. Consequently, St. Helena public schools have remained in a desegregation case for the past sixty years, despite the official end of segregation in 1989. SHCMS suffers from high staff turnover, having been under the leadership of four principals since August 2011. Staff turnover during the 2011-2012 school year reached 180%, with 45 staff members either leaving or being asked to resign.

Having received failing scores for four years in a row, St. Helena Middle School was taken from the control of the St. Helena School District in the spring of 2010 and is now run by the Recovery School District. The 2011-2012 school year was the first in which choir was offered as an elective course at St. Helena Central Middle. Last year, our school’s testing scores showed improvement, and we hope to further the positive changes taking place at SHCMS with another big “first” by organizing the first out-of-state, over-night school trip ever taken by a group from our school.

Tumblr is really good at raising money for Kickstarter projects and members of various fandoms. I want to see if we can raise money for underprivileged kids. Help them out, please. They have until 11:59 PM on December 31st to raise the money.

As of my queueing this to post again, these kids have less than two days to finish raising the money. They have $7,080 out of their $9,325 goal, and it’d be even better if they could beat their goal.
