On Sylvia Tietjens and Train Sex.
Did she or didn’t she wear underwear? And what kind?
I’m trying to figure out the logistics of having sex in a moving train while wearing Edwardian clothes.
Obviously, this is a pressing problem that requires me to do more background research than I would like just to write a sex scene! I bet that the Downton Abbey fandom could help me out with this but I’m not sure where to start.
My suspicion is that she was wearing what are called ‘French knickers’: loose-fitting short knickers that would have been worn under petticoats. The advantages of such garments (at least from the perspective of trying to write Edwardian erotica) is that they were loose enough to be pushed to the side, if need be.
If you catch my drift…

In the days of hoop skirts, you would actually wear split drawers, where the legs were simply not attached together at the crotch. No idea if that was still the thing in the Edwardian period, though.
