Frankie Magazine July/August 2012 - Famous Folk - Benedict Cumberbatch
Bookish Charms
by Andy WelchSherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch on bringing literature to life.
“Oh fucking hell, I don’t know,” shrieks Benedict Cumberbatch, stumped by an apparently tricky question. He may be famous for playing brainiac characters like Stephen Hawking and Sherlock Holmes - who spends his time on screen cracking impossible riddles devised by criminal masterminds - but a journalist has him on the ropes today. And all it took were the words, “Why do you think you’re cast in such clever roles?” After pondering and blushing, Benedict offers a suggestion: “It’s a mystery to me. I’m a complete Neanderthal, really. I suppose it’s because I’m strange-looking.”
